Othello and the theme of friendship in the play Essay

Friendship is a special bond between two or more people. This relationship is built on the basis of trust, loyalty and honesty. In the play Othello, Shakespeare demonstrates these qualities through many of his characters to portray their deep friendships. However as the play progresses these friends turn into foes as many problems occur in their friendships and lead to many tragic events. The negative qualities that tore these friendships apart are distrust, selfishness and jealousy that led many of the characters to their tragedies. In the play Othello, Shakespeare demonstrates that there are many causes of the problems that occur in certain friendships. In Shakespeare’s Othello, many friendships showed a lack of trust which resulted into many tragic events. This negative quality is repeatedly found in the character of Othello. Shakespeare wrote the relationship between Othello and Cassio to be that of friendship that consists of loyalty and honesty. The conflict between these two characters arose as Iago plants seeds of doubt into Othello’s mind about Cassio’s loyalty towards him. Othello’s trust in his friend Cassio was like a thin thread. It was very easy for Iago to succeed in his evil plans, for there was a lack of trust in their friendship. Iago manipulates Othello into believing that his honest wife Desdemona is having an affair with the loyal lieutenant Cassio. Although Iago gives no form of physical evidence, his convincing words are strong enough to allow such intense thoughts to enter Othello’s mind. As Iago states to Othello:†It is impossible you should see this,Were they as prime as goats, as hot as mnkeys,As salt as wolves in pride, and fools as grossAs ignorance made drunk.† (3.3.402-405)Iago uses such intense imagery of Desdemona and Cassio sleeping together, that it forces Othello to be enraged with such anger at Cassio’s betrayal. After falling into Iago’s trap and believing his dishonest words, Othello says†Within these three days let me hear thee sayThat Cassio’s not alive.† (3.3.472-473)All the anger and jealousy of betrayal that Othello feels, due to the mistrust between Othello and Cassio, leads Othello to plan the murder of lieutenant Cassio. The lack of trust between Othello and Cassio is also shown after the fight between Cassio and Roderigo took place. Othello’s distrust in Cassio led Othello to believe Iago’s words. He also took the fact that Cassio was drunk as a major flaw in him and instantly dismissed him from his position as lieutenant, not  giving Cassio an opportunity to defend himself in full consciousness. Othello’s distrust in Cassio is displayed when he believes that lieutenant Cassio would be at fault for a deed, which he did not intentionally commit. Othello announces,†I know, Iago,Thy honesty and love doth mince this matter,Making it light to Cassio. Cassio, I love thee; But never more be officer of mine.† (2.3.225-228)This announcement is made while Cassio is still drunk; during this time he is not in a suitable state to defend him self. The lack of trust in the relationship of Othello and Cassio leads to tragic and sorrowful events. The Shakespearean play Othello carries many different causes of problems between the characters of the play. Many times throughout the play selfishness is displayed as a cause to many of the tragic events that occur, as many of the characters did things for their own benefit. A great amount of selfishness is shown in many of Iago’s relationships. His relationship with his wife Emilia would be well only when Emilia would do something for Iago. Although Emilia is aware of this, she is willing to do any favours for him, even picking up Desdemona’s handkerchief because Iago asked her too. Iago’s selfishness allows him to use his own wife for his evil desires of persuading Othello. â€Å"I am glad I have found this napkin; This was her first remembrance from the Moor. My wayward husband hath a hundred timesWoo’d me to steal it; but she so loves the token,For he conjured her she should ever keep it,That she reserves it evermore about herTo kiss and talk to. I’ll have the work ta’en outAnd give’t Iago: what he will do with itHeaven knows, not I;I nothing but to please his fantasy.† (3.3.290-299)To take his selfish plan further, Iago uses his wife Emilia’s loyalty to his own advantage. During the time Emilia kept the handkerchief in her hands, Iago’s speech towards Emilia was very different. â€Å"A good wench; give it me.† (3.3.313)Wench is an informal word to describe a young woman. Throughout the play it is showed that Iago believed women are  prostitutes and work at night. Iago’s use but dislike in women establishes his selfishness. Shakespeare demonstrates Iago’s selfish desires to be rank a higher position, through many events. Selfishness was portrayed by the character of Iago with his friend Roderigo as well. Iago advised Roderigo to send Desdemona some jewels and money by Iago, to gain Desdemona, his ex-fiancà © back. Later it is found out that Iago never did present the gifts to Desdemona, but had kept it for himself. Iago even asks Roderigo to instigate a quarrel between Roderigo and Cassio, which would lead to the dismissal of Cassio’s position, as Cassio was drunk and all blame would fall on him. Iago continued to use Roderigo, as he states,†Thus do I ever make my fool my purse; For I mine own gain’d knowledge should profaneIf I would time expend with such a snipeBut for my sport and profit.† (1.3.372-375)Iago’s selfishness leads him to use Rodrigo to his benefit and advantage, not caring for the damage and emotional stress it must cost Rodrigo. Iago’s selfishness leads this friendship to Rodrigo’s own tragedy. Jealousy is something that can make a person do anything. Shakespeare’s play Othello establishes how jealousy tore many of the friendships apart. The friendship between Iago and Othello was greatly affected by the jealousy Iago felt towards him, because of Othello’s high rank and power; Othello holds a great reputation in Cyprus. Iago also wanted position and carried a desire to be lieutenant. He befriended Othello so thinking he may get the position, but Othello gave the position to the loyal and capable Cassio, also Othello’s friend. Iago believed Othello slept with his wife Emilia, which caused a lot of jealousy and anger within Iago. Iago was jealous that his wife Emilia slept with Othello, so he decided to give Othello the same trauma. â€Å"†¦ Rouse him, Make after him, poison his delight,Proclaim him in the streets, Incense her kinsmen,And though he in a fertile climate dwell,Plague him with flies; though that his joy be joy,Yet throw such changes of vexation on’t,As it may lose some colour.† (1.1.69-73)Iago’s jealousy caused him to do and plot evil and selfish deeds that would lead to many tragic events. Iago disliked Cassio for the same reason he disliked Othello; a higher rank. Instead of Iago, Cassio was appointed lieutenant by Othello; this caused  Cassio to have a higher position. Iago speaks to Roderigo about Othello’s decision and states,†Ã¢â‚¬ ¦the better shall my purpose work on him. Cassio’s a proper man, Let me see now:To get his place, and to plumpe up my willIn double knavery -How, how?- Let’s see:- †¦Ã¢â‚¬ (1.3.380-384)It is now evident Iago is jealous and wants revenge on both these characters, due to what he feel they have done to him. Iago believes Othello ‘overlooked’ him and choose Cassio as lieutenant, and Cassio took over him and accepted that position. Throughout the play Othello Shakespeare establishes many causes of the problems that occur between many friendships. It is clearly shown that many of the characters created by Shakespeare in Othello carried a lack of trust among each other. Many of the same characters were noticed as selfish characters. These characters would do anything to achieve what they desire and long for, would take advantage of anything that would benefit them. Jealousy was also a trait discovered as a cause of many problems. Jealousy was the main cause of most of the tragic events that occurred throughout the play of Othello. Shakespeare’s Othello creates a high understanding of the nature of human relationships. Bibliography: Othello by William Shakespeare

Socioeconomic Structures and History in Spanish and Portuguese

Heather Coffey HIST 3401W December 18th, 2012 Socioeconomic Structures and History in Spanish and Portuguese America from the Conquest until Post Colonial Period Throughout the entire history of Portuguese and Spanish occupation of the Americas there were evolving hierarchies, labor regimes, gender relations, sources of wealth, regions of wealth, trade routes, uprisings, economic hard times and high times, etc. A very prominent source behind this constant ebb and flow of the history of Portuguese and Spanish Americas can easily be attributed to the economic forces always at play.It can be seen in the reasons for the conquest of Latin america and South America, the onset of the colonial period and the rebellions of eighteenth century. It is important to understand the economic drives that were in play in the beginning of the conquest because it would inevitably change the social landscape of Mexico, the outlying islands and South America forever. The Age of Exploration brought upon a wealth of knowledge for the world, and specifically for the Kingdoms of Spain and Portugal it also brought a lot of wealth. The rivalry between the two kingdoms and need for financial gains led the two to divide the areas of the world where exploration was viable with the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494 which divided the lands East of the demarcation line (halfway between the Cape Verde Islands) to Portugal and the lands west of that to Spain. Keeping within these boundaries, explorers such as Christopher Columbus, Hernan Cortes and Francisco Pizarro (among many others) scoured the newly discovered Americas in search of new land, but also new sources of wealth.Upon reaching the Americas, both in Mexico and the surrounding areas as well as South America, one of the main goals was the search for wealth in Gold and Silver. The hunt for both as well as other rich resources at first led the explorers on a wild goose chase around the alien lands and native people until areas were found and d eemed suitable for settlement and a worthy and financially sound decision as it would prove to be for Spain and Portugal. †¦where have men seen what they see today, fleets entering loaded with gold and silver as if it were iron? Or where was it known or read that so much wealth could come from one kingdom? So much and so great is it that Spain is full of these treasures, and her cities are populated by many rich perusers who have left there. â€Å"1 Once regions were settled and indigenous resistance to colonizing efforts were temporarily brought somewhat under control the exploitation of the rich resources of the land began. There were shiploads of Spanish and Portuguese men (and some women) brought into Latin America to aid in the settlement process, but it was the indigenous that were used in the farming and mining of these resources as well as the upkeep of the households of the white families by the indigenous women. This aided in the creation of the pyramid of the divisio ns of class and caste throughout all of Mexico and South America, at first drawing distinct lines between â€Å"White† and Indian. As time progresses the indigenous succumb to diseases brought by the white people and the population of Indians from all regions declines drastically.African slave trade was key here as they replaced the vast numbers of Indians lost, but also then entered them into the socio-economic orders. In the times of the conquest and the beginnings of the colonial period the lines of race were much clearer, White, Indian and Black, but this would change and the lines would blur through out the colonial period as races mix. The gender relations between the races began early with, more commonly, the slave women or african or Indian descent brought in to do slave work in white households or to do the â€Å"female† tasks of spinning wool, etc. , women were taken in as concubines and thus the blending of white and indian and black began. By the colonial p eriod and beyond there would be upwards of sixteen different names for the gradations in color and subsequently class. The very bottom of the â€Å"social† pyramid being slaves, mostly blacks who were immovable in the caste system due to their â€Å"involuntary citizenship and thus assumed treachery†3. It's interesting to see how the need for free and cheap labor brought what would shape the future identities that would become those of the Americas.Over time the economies of both Spain and portugal became dependent on the goods, tax revenues and tributes coming from Latin America and through times when the â€Å"goods† weren't doing so well they had to rely more heavily on other aspects. There were periods of time when the silver production at Potosi, for instance, wasn't doing well due to lack of supplies needed for mining. These regions then would be hit heavily with raised tributes from lower social orders as well as enforced and raised taxes on goods traded within the regions as would be the cause of the Repartimiento de Comercio in 1751.These financial strains as well as the enforced labor of men used as tribute as well (mita) left the majority of the population (lower classes) financially and even physically weak. This continued to grow and grow throughout the colonial period caused great discontent â€Å"Conflicts over land distribution, tribute rates, mitt allocations, the succession to ethnic leadership posts, and abuses by local priests and corregidores frequently disturbed local indigenous communities during the eighteenth century. The spread of the repartee often exacerbated such local tensions, leading to an escalation of violence. 4 These issues would like to the uprisings and rebellions that would create chaos for the Spanish and Portuguese throughout the late eighteenth century and on, the most notable being those lead by Tomas Katari, Tupac Amaru II and Tupac Katari in Peru and upper Peru from 1780-1783. The socioeconomic history of Spanish and Portuguese America is a broad topic, hard to even begin to explain in a short paper as this. That being said, I believe that it's important to understand the impact that it had on the entire region. The effects that it had on the populations from the declining population of indigenous from illness brought from Europe, to the subsequent new races of people caused by the blending of populations all forced to live together. Also the strain that this would inevitably put on those being taken advantage of by the colonial leaders and Castilian and Portuguese crowns. This entire history from the fifteenth century until the early nineteenth century was put into motion by cause and effect situations led by the greed of men, this need for wealth that would take over and hange the lives of millions. 1. Opinion of natural disasters - Essay Example For instance, in Pakistan the flooding disaster was accelerated by human factors including insufficient flood control infrastructure on heavily modified river and the increasing population along its surroundings. A recent research has proven that human activities such as mining, industrialization have led to the global warming. Global warming has resulted breaking of iceberg hence rising of the ocean water levels. Due to the scarcity of resources in areas negatively affected by climate, the social gap widens, causing political unrest that heightens the tension among the rich and the poor. A political conflict may come later, which may be difficult to reverse as vulnerable societies tries to grab vicinities not affected by calamities (Dahlman, Renwick and William 122). Human vulnerability has recently resulted to dangerous calamities. As the population grows, human activities increase likewise resulting to a conflict between natural dangerous earth processes (Dahlman, Renwick and William 192). Catastrophes like wildfire, earthquakes and floods are all dangerous events that can affect vulnerable populations. Haiti’s high population and a history of deforestation greatly contributed to the mudslides that claimed thousands of lives. However, humans can minimize the social, environmental and economic impact on natural disasters by preparing and alerting citizens before major catastrophes, to respond quickly and efficiently to lessen the damage and disruption during and after the calamity and speed up the recovery process (Dahlman, Renwick and William

Riverbend Telephone Company case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Riverbend Telephone Company - Case Study Example To determine the better decision between the two options, an analysis of the expenses to be suffered by the firm over the five years must be done. The tables shown below shows the analysis of the estimated expenses for the two options over the five years. From the two tables, the projected expenditures for each of the options is shown. If the company chose to hire the truck, it would approximately spend $98,540 to cater for the lease charges as well as the maintenance costs. By choosing to purchase the vehicle, the firm would be required to spend $89,880 on its purchase and maintenance. Additionally, if the company bought the truck, the estimated worth of the truck after five years would be $1,800. This would cut on the expenses value to ($89880 - $1800), reducing the expenses value to $88,080. From the analysis, the purchase option saves the company up to $10,460. In business, this amount is huge enough for the company to avoid losing, and for this reason, the better option for the firm is to purchase to truck, as opposed to hiring. This is simply because the purchase option is $10,460 cheaper than hiring the truck for five years. From the schedule table, the expected accumulated depreciation after five years will be $22,410. This would reduce the depreciation costs as computed using the straight-line method, by $1,890. Since the difference margin from the initial comparison was over $10,000, the $1,890 cannot be huge enough to change the decision on the purchase of the truck. The firm should buy the vehicle, even when based on this method of depreciation. Mr. Freeman should consider all the expenses, including the annual lease charges. For instance, in the first annual report, he should report that the expenses are $39,416. This includes the maintenance costs and the lease

Philosphy In Teaching Personal Statement Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Philosphy In Teaching - Personal Statement Example The four branches of philosophy- metaphysics, epistemology, logic and axiology can be utilized by a teacher in his job. Metaphysics can be used in teaching to answer the essential questions that arise in the mind of a student about life, reality and one’s existence. Metaphysics can be considered a starting point from which the education of a child starts. Epistemology is the philosophy of knowledge and a teacher can use it by explaining the importance of education and knowledge to a student. Use of axiology and logic are the characteristics which every teacher should instill in his students and they are an essential part of learning. Psychological theories like constructivism have influenced modern educational practices. According to constructivism, the knowledge a person has is a result of his experiences. Teachers who practice constructivism have a more interactive environment in their classrooms and the students are usually aware of the learning objective planned by the teacher. A constructivist environment will lead the child to ask the right questions and sharpen his learning abilities. Constructivist teachers change themselves and the classroom environment according to the students as every student has different learning thresholds. Each child would have individual and undivided attention of the teacher and the students will be forced to think and question. John Dewey was a philosopher and an educationalist and has made great contributions to the field of education. He is mostly associated with learner centered education. It was his belief that schools were no more than social establishments where the way the children learned was through interaction. So he focused on the importance of interaction of students and curriculum. He suggested that the curriculums should be made in such a manner that every student gets to utilize his skills and it should be of interest to all students. His key ideas are individualism, readiness and pragmatism (Education.com) The modern curriculum is different from the traditional one that had been followed for centuries. Epistemological factors such as Perennialism, Essentialism, Progressivism, and Reconstructionism are used in the making of the curricula. This includes that the students learn of the great achievements and success of the people in the West and learn how to solve their problems like people in t he West do. Every school’s curriculum stresses on teaching the students morals and ethics and teaching them to use logic in their daily lives. The curriculum is based on the student rather than the teacher. As a teacher, I will make sure that the environment where I am teaching is optimum for learning and that students actively participate in the class and ask questions. I should be able to make the students think on their own and ask questions, as well as take part in constructive arguments. Constructivist philosophy of teaching should be implemented in the classroom, and the class should be inspirational and motivational. Every student’s need should be catered and every student should get individual attention. The students should be given tasks which are of their interest and their level and no student should be left behind. Source of authority is where the power to rule comes from. In

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - Research Paper Example Another population that is showing emerging increase in PTSD is fire-fighters. More and more cases of major depressive disorder (MDD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are coming to light, making it important for understanding of the conditions and therefore development of effective treatments. Feczer and Bjorklund (2009) define PTSD as â€Å" an anxiety disorder characterized by a triad of symptoms following exposure or trauma, including persistent re-experiencing of the traumatic stressors through flashbacks, nightmares, and/or intrusive thoughts, avoidance of stimuli associated with the trauma along with the numbing or general unresponsiveness; and persistent symptoms of increased arousal† (p.278). PTSD is classified as an anxiety disorder since although anxiety has many of the symptoms and signs of fear, it also lingers long after the event and the threat associated with it have passed. This is perhaps the most unique characteristic of PTSD. Vieweg et al (2006) follow the development of the definition. In 1980 the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders first described PTSD as an anxiety disorder. In a later revision in 1987 the diagnostic criteria were revised to emphasize the avoidance phenomenon and in the 1994 edition traum a was redefined. The definition of trauma is important to the understanding of how it is applied to PTSD. Grant et al (2008) define a trauma as â€Å"an event involving actual or threatened loss of life or personal integrity such that one experiences extreme fear, helplessness or horror† (p.662). The American Psychiatric Association expands the explanation of the traumatic event saying that it must involve actual or threatened death or serious injury of a threat to one’s physical being. Witnessing the actual death or threat to another’s

Business-Related International Event Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Business-Related International Event - Essay Example Several governments with nationals aboard the ill-fated plane have informed families and friends of the passengers to prepare for the worst following the disappearance of the plane. The disappearance of the plane and the developing speculation on the same has had myriad economic implications globally as the essay below analyses. Terrorism for example is an international threat to peace and stability. The manifestation of a terrorist attack on the plane as speculation has had in the past few days makes several Chinese’s and Malaysian cities vulnerable. Such an attack would prove that the securities agencies in Kuala Lumpur do not carry out extensive and effective scrutiny of international passengers (Celia, 2014). Air traffic into such regions is therefore likely to reduce thereby slowing the pace of economic activities in different cities within the eastern bloc. As explained, terrorism is a global threat and in case the speculations are factual then the catastrophe would serve to prove that the governments in the eastern bloc are not doing enough to secure their borders from external terrorist attacks. Security is a major concern to the development of entrepreneurship in any market. Entrepreneurs travel from different destinations with their products and require security in order to grow their businesses. A terrorist attack portrays lack of security in a country thereby increasing the fear most entrepreneurs have in such markets. A claim that more than two hundred passengers aboard the plane had stolen passports provides much insight on the operations at the international airport in Kuala, Lumpur (Sophia, 2014). The lack of effective security coupled with the globalized nature of the disaster is likely to destroy the economic market in the country as foreign investors and tourists will shy away of the market owing to the proven terrorist threats. Plane accidents often make international news owing to the interest that such

It positioned in an environmentally conducive which are compatible most activities which go on daily basis. There are wide approvals which are received from the diverse changes of environments. The country receives two seasons of hot and warm climatic conditions. This provides opportunities to carries out different activities at different period of the year. The activities range from agricultural based work which includes fishing and land cultivations to tourisms. Agricultural chores are not eminently carried out within the country as the rains are not often reliable. However, there are vast rich lands which produce wide variety of agricultural products. Such land which lies to the southern parts of the prestigious state. The people have developed the uniqueness adoption to accommodate the various foods stuffs richly comprising of the fruit. These are adequately endowed with sweetness which they really enjoy during the hot periods of the day especially in the lunch hour time. This is certain fully juicy sweetness of the fruit is highly enjoyed by the inhabitant. These and other factors make Korea a metropolitans place for which cannot be overlooked on rapid business operations prospering from one level to any. (Gerson, 1995) Many people from allover may critically have negativity of the past situations which the Korea country has been devastated by war. But to the recent surprise is that the country is emerging to be the most attractive for investments. Like many English men have said in the past many years, it can also be repeated by the new generations in existence that let bygones be bygones. The new era of the Koreans has come which is transforming the country’s economic from its dismal grounds the leading level. Thus is seen as it is going to match with the most developed countries which for a more than ten decades has been mocked and blasphemed by the world over. As it is observed from the current research on the economics fields, the Koreans haves advanced within the past half century, making the country to achieve the fasted economic growth in the world. This is achieved after having risen from the poorest world’s countries to developed country. This is an extraordinary development which cannot be achieved by the singled country efforts on the internally produced products. The increase in productivity of a state or systems encompasses many factors. Some of the factors are internally attributed while others are externally contributed. The internally factors which are more important have contributed to this extraordinary emergency of the Koreans growth. It is observed that the moment peace fades away from one point of space; it is replaced with the enmity which brings in destruction and havoc. There is also a reverse change of the same trends that when enmity clears off tit is replaced by peaces. Unsubtly the Koreans have discovered this secrecy and this has led the country to greater heights of peace people. The fruits of it are now forming the centre of rejoicing for the people are in sheer freedom country. This restored peace is not only being a amazing blessing to the Korean sect but it is a relinquish of agony to the neighboring states as it formed a metropolitans place for many. Among the main advantaged are these indigenous citizens of the closely related people from the china state who for have been their key in the general development in the Asian continent. It’s said that a character is built from the people of whom someone associates with. It seems that the Koreans are much matching themselves with the highest flying countries to achieve global recognitions. The country has developed goods relations with the people from many countries for which it is seen to maintain closers relationship with those states which have higher market demand likes china and Japan. These are some of the most renowned countries which have also developed from such impoverished state to world class recognized world power. It is therefore the believes of most citizens hailing from Korea that the same open countries focus to entertain and attract many investors, the country will be a worlds in development as well as world’s largest market. The efforts of doing so are very eminent which are not limited to private and public organization together with the ruling government. The government has relentlessly been vigilant on many area concerned with the thriving of the economy growth both internally and externally. The effort for this has created a challenge in developing new infrastructures within the various point of developing. It is evidence that the government has initiated the one of the vast area for the development of logistics infrastructure. This are mostly designated development place for the provision of free economics’ zone. Such an opportunity has been widely applause both by the Koreans and even by the core and feeble Koreans relatives. The cloth has been cut to impress those who are craving for the trading chance to amaze the other countries which are dragging slowly in development. This is therefore highly an inevitable opportunity which the whole Korean community has confidence that a swarm of investors will definitely enough. (Bangs, 1990) The provisions which the Koreans are using are not limited to high competitive industrial structures. Many companies are coming up with minimum restriction the trade policy departments and ministries. This has given room for set up huge industries which produces various products. Some having substitute and competing products while others have monopolized productions due to lack new investor. The monopolized scheme debated own day by day. This has leads to the government to invent the new systems of offering the free economic zone where investments are encouraged to take place especially the monopolized products manufacturing companies. This include companies such those involved in the shipbuilding, automobiles and the electronics devices which are rarely available to the local markets. After considering the needs of citizens especially the youth, the governments have reduced dramatically the taxes on these products. They further providing subsides to the companies so that low priced products are realized in the marketing. The efforts are not only for the provision of low priced products, but they are also geared at high production. This is being achieved by the provision of training course at low costs to the youth who are interested in learning the new sort of technologies. It is estimated that the introduction of this program more fours hundred thousands youngsters have been trained. These are new people who can invent and even news methods for the development of standards. The high population of the country is providing surprising cheap labor which is readily available in the main central business. This allows the investor to cheaply produce the products with highly motivated and industrious Korean workforce. This spirit of the Koreans has an exciting significance influence over the major manufacturing sectors. Generally, such spirited individuals and effortless campaigns by the rulers are seen highly reduced prices which are giving the other world class international traders a very stiff competitive conditions. (Kishel, 2000)   The most tricking factors which make Korea highly success state is the strategic positions in which it holds. The country being situated in open of the major economic bloc, it has more than fifty one cities which hold a population exceeding one million people. The good relationship of the Koreans people makes them trade widely with the people from Seoul which is just 3.5 hour flight. Since there is even greater populations in the territories of the Seoul city, which holds more than 700 millions peoples living within a radius of 1200 km, these are ready markets in which fast goods are rushed for sale. The greater population of the people which visa now excedsing the productivity capacity is creating pressure on the resources available. This is calling for the rapid changes on the productions systems which will enable the country continue to expansion its commodities to its markets.   The goods have ready markets in added advantages to the investors who would continues to captures the intended reduction cost of road and air transports costs. This forms extra effort for the Koreans to introduce the high communication networks. Such is the dreams of having global power house which will transform the countries within the shortest period of time. (Withers, 1990) Reference: Withers, J. News Updates on â€Å"Tree man† Essay On January 19, Shurmer (2010), a writer for the Comment News website wrote an article updating the site readers on the ongoing struggles of Richard Pennicuik, better known as â€Å"Tree man. † Since early December of the previous year, Tree man had been living in a gum tree near his house in Hume Road, in the City of Gosnells, as a form of protest and to save the tree from the city council plans to clear the street of any and all mature trees that may cause harm by dropping large limbs. As of the writing of the article, he had been in the tree for 43 days and was experiencing physical difficulties on top of his legal issues as there was a severe heatwave and the high temperatures were causing him discomfort. Entitled â€Å"‘Tree man’ loses hope,† the article chronicled Tree man’s fading optimism caused by heat-induced headaches; the council fining him $5000, as it deemed the platforms that served as his makeshift treehouse were illegal, and forcing him to remove these structures; and the abandonment of an adjacent gum tree by a rotating team who had occupied it for the same cause. A couple of months later on March 13th, a Staff Writer (2010) for Perthnow a local subsidiary of The Sunday Times, wrote a relatively more recent update piece on the Tree man. Asking â€Å"Tree man Richard Pennicuik for mayor? † the report comes on the heels of a stand-off the previous day wherein he still refused to come down from the tree even after policemen and tree-cutting machinery had arrived. Apparently, despite the previous report on his morale and health problems, he had stayed on the tree for another 53 days. The title of the article comes from a comment Tree man had made, saying he had intentions of running for city mayor as the current council he was battling was â€Å"laughable and unworkable. † An analytical comparison of these two Tree man news article updates will be discussed. The first, most noticeable, difference between the two news articles is their marked difference in length, with the first article much longer than the second. Although quantity does not necessarily denote substance, it can be observed that the Comment News article contains relatively more actual facts about the situation than the PerthNow article. In addition, on a related note, it can also be noticed that the former article has more content related to the actual subject, as denoted by the article title, than the latter. As an example to support both of these observations, although Comment News does not include a quote wherein Tree man explicitly stated that he was â€Å"losing hope,† it does mention why this would be the case by including a quote where he said he â€Å"didn’t cope well† with the heatwave headaches and how the $5000 fine would â€Å"ruin his family. † The PerthNow article, on the other hand, only justifies the title mentioning Tree man’s mayoral aspirations with the quote: The current regime is laughable and unworkable and I want to get in there, if I have enough supporters, to run the council the way it should be run. The rest of the article, however, does not mention the issue again and only contains a brief summary of the previous day’s stand-off and another quote from Tree man where he reasserts his stance. The Comment News article does seem to slightly force the â€Å"losing hope† theme though, by briefly mentioning that the street was desolate due to the abandonment of the adjacent gum tree, although Tree man is not mentioned as having an opinion on this. However, this observation still contributes to the discussion of the main subject. Coherence to a specific topic is somewhat of a requirement for any formal article, especially one that is professionally written. The briefness and lack of coherence in the case of the latter article can, however, can be attributed to the writer expecting the reades to already know the details as the situation was already months-long, and there was a climactic update the day before. Both articles do, however, paint Tree man as both a dedicated activist from his acts of defiance, and also a novelty character as the tones of his quotes in the first article are slightly rattled and dramatic and in the second, noticeably vague. He was also described as remaining â€Å"defiantly aloft† despite legal and physical danger, and his lawyer’s protests. Preparation of Terbium Hydroxide Nanowires by Hydrothermal

Preparation of Terbium Hydroxide Nanowires by Hydrothermal The preparation of Terbium hydroxide nanowires  by hydrothermal method The single-crystalline Tb(OH)3 with various morphologies was successfully prepared from Tb2O3 powder by adjusting the concentration of acetic acid under hydrothermal condition. The influence of the concentration of acetic acid and reaction temperature on the crystalline phase and morphologies of Tb(OH)3 products was discussed. The concentration of acetic acid plays a key role in determining the products morphology. Eventually, the mechanism of acetic acid on morphology of products was deeply discussed. Keywords: Tb(OH)3, nanowires, spindle, rare earth, hydrothermal. Introduction Rare-earth elements are a group of 17 chemically similar metallic elements, including the 15 lanthanides, plus scandium and yttrium because of their similar chemical properties. The oxides of rare-earth elements have been extensive used in past decades because of their optic, electric, magnetic, and catalytic properties, which are caused by their unique electronic structures and numerous transition modes involving the 4f shells of their ions. These properties strongly depend on the composition, morphology and dimensionality of products, which are sensitive to the bonding states of rare earth ions. In recent years, many important materials have been prepared in the form of nanowires to generate some unexpected properties. Nanowires represent a class of quasi-one-dimensional materials, in which carrier motion is restricted in two directions so that they usually exhibit significant photochemical, physical, and electron-transport properties which differ from that of bulk or nanoparticle materials. Recently, three dimensional (3D) nanostructured architectures have been explored for a new generation of advanced devices such as supercapacitors, fuel cells, and sensors owing to some improved properties originating from their nanobuilding blocks and the manners in which they are organized. Up to now, a wide variety of inorganic materials, including metal,6a metal oxide,6b–d hydrate,6e borate,6f molybdate,6g,h and tungstate,6i have been successfully prepared with complex 3D hierarchical shapes by the solution-phase chemical method, due to its low cost and potential advantage for large-scale production. However, exploration of reasonable synthetic methods for controlled construction of complex 3D architectures of other inorganic functional materials via a chemical self-assembly route is still an intensive and hot research topic. In the controlled construction of self-assembly of 1D or 2D nanobuilding blocks into 3D novel nanoarchitectures, copolymers and surfactants always play important roles due to their directing functions during the aggregation process as well as their stabilizing effects in equilibrium systems. [Lu-1] For example, who and who reported the Who et al. have described systematically the †¦ However, there are only several report on the synthesis of Among the family of rare earth compounds, the terbium oxide is the important functional rare earth material. It had been used as a promising candidate for ceramic pigments, catalysts, promoters and stabilizers in combustion catalysts, oxygen-storage components, and materials with higher electrical conductivity. In addition, terbium hydroxides are of great importance because rare earth oxides can be straight formed through dehydration from hydroxides. To date, many terbium hydroxides particles have been synthesized via a hydrothermal route due to the advantages of high purity and good homogeneity, and the corresponding structured rare earth oxides were made by calcining the precursors. [Lu-1] In the present work, we exploited a one-step hydrothermal route to prepare nano-scale terbium hydroxide with various morphologies. In addition, the mechanism of acetic acid on morphology of products was deeply discussed. The reaction mechanism leading to the lutetium oxide precursor and the self-assembly process were discussed. A possible formation mechanism for the morphology evolution of these microstructures was suggested, which was not reported before. Experimental section: 2.1. Preparation of Tb(OH)3 precursors All chemicals with analytical grade were purchased from Wako Pure Chemical Industries, Ltd., Japan, and used without further purification. A detailed description of the preparation process is as follows: 15 mL of acetic acid solution with various concentrations (0.001~0.2M) and 0.45 g of Tb2O3were placed in a 25 mL Teflon-lined autoclave. The autoclave was sealed, heated in an electric oven to 200  °C at a heating rate of 5  °C/min, and maintained at 200  °C for 6 h with rotation for agitation. The autoclave was then cooled to room temperature via air quenching. The precipitate was collected using a centrifuge, washed with distilled water, and dried at room temperature. In order to investigate the mechanism, the reaction temperature and reaction time were appropriately changed. The pure water, sodium hydroxide and the other type of solutions were used as the solvent instead of acetic acid solution. 2.3. Characterization Powder X-ray diffractions (XRD) were performed using a Rigaku RTP-300RC diffractometer operating at 40 kV and 100 mA with Cu Kà ¯Ã‚ Ã‚ ¡ radiation (à ¯Ã‚ Ã‚ ¬) 1.54056 ÃŽ ¼m. The patterns were collected in the range of 10 ° to 70 ° with a 0.02 ° step and scanning speed of 4 °/min. The micrographs of field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) were obtained using a JEOL JSM-6500F electron microscope operating at 15 kV. The samples were heated in air at a ramp rate of 10  ºC/min. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra were obtained using a Shimadzu FTIR-8200PC spectrophotometer at room temperature. Result and discussion 3.1. Influence of acetic acid concentration on the phase and morphology of the obtained precursors The chemical composition and crystal structure of the samples were firstly determined by XRD measurements. Fig. 1 shows the XRD patterns of as-prepared samples in the various concentrations of acetic acid solution. It is easy found that when the concentration of HAc was lower than 0.15M (fig.1a~e), the XRD patterns can be indexed to be a pure hexagonal phase of Tb(OH)3, in agreement with the reported data (JCPDS 83-2038) with lattice constants a=6.3150 Ã… and c=3.6030Ã…. With the enhancement of concentration of HAc, the intensity of main diffraction peak (100) gradually reduced, meanwhile the full width at half maximum (FWHM) increased gradually. It means that the crystallinity of products and crystalline grain were gradually decreased. It is important to note that the relative intensity ratio of (110) and (101) peaks was changed with the increse of concentration of CH3COOH, suggesting that the preferential growth along c-axis occurs with the increse of concentration of CH3COOH . When the concentration was further increased to 0.2 M, an unknown phase was formed. The XRD patters showed the compound have the layered structure according to the d value. In order to determine the chemical composition of the unknown phase, the Infrared spectra was allowed to use. Fig.2 shows the FT-IR spectra for the as-prepared simples. The typical peaks of Tb(OH)3 products (fig2.a~e)were found at ca. 3610 and 670 cm-1. In accordance with the results in literature, these two bands can be associated with OH stretching and with Tb-OH bending modes in the hydroxide[à ¦-†¡Ãƒ §Ã…’ ®]. The FTIR spectra show that these products are free of organic byproducts. The IR spectra of the unknown phase (fig2.f) show additional adsorption bands at 3380, 2924 , 2853,1568, 1443 and 1011 cm-1. The occurrence of a broad 3390 cm-1 band is attributed to residual traces of water in the sample. The bands at 2924 and 2853 cm-1 correspond to –CH3 stretching and –CH3 against stretching vibration, respectively. These bands are located between 1568 and 1443 cm-1, which are typical for stretching vibrations of carboxylate groups Va(COO-) and Vs(COO-), resp ectively[à ¦-†¡Ãƒ §Ã…’ ®]. The band at 1011 cm-1 corresponds to Tb-OH bending vibration. On the basis of the IR spectraà ¯Ã‚ ¼Ã…’the precursor material is assumed to contain metal acetate hydrate and metallic hydrate (Tb(CH3COO)X(OH)Y†¢H2O). The SEM images of several typical samples with distinct morphologies are presented in Fig.3a-f. It is found that the concentration of acetic acid (HAc) plays a key role in determining the product morphology. Tb(OH)3 could be obtained at concentration between 0.001 to 0.15M. At low HAc concentration (fig.3a), the obtained product is composed of granular aggregates and it was difficult to distinguish each other. A slight increase in concentration to 0.01M (fig.3b), the morphology changed to microfibers of nanowires aggregated with diameter of 1.5 ÃŽ ¼m and length up to 5 ÃŽ ¼m. It is easy to find that these microfibers were composed of bundles of nanowires. The diameter of these nanowires ranges from 50 to 100 nanometers. As HAc concentration was further increased to 0.03M (fig.3c), the spindle-like structures ranging in diameter less than 2ÃŽ ¼m and length more than 10ÃŽ ¼m were obtained. When HAc concentration was added to 0.1 M (fig.3d), the length of the bundles of nanowires was fu rther increase to more than 12ÃŽ ¼m along with the decrease of the diameter. At the same time, the diameter of the nanowires also gradually reduced. To further increase the concentration of HAc to 0.15M (fig.3e), the bundles of nanowires began to varying degrees of separation, some single nanowires began to form. These nanostructures are found to be in a wide scale of size, ranging in diameter from less than 12ÃŽ ¼m to more than 2 ÃŽ ¼m. Finally, when the concentration was further increased to 0.2 M (fig.3f), the SEM photograph also showed that this compound consisted of plate-like crystals, which is in agreement with the XRD result. 3.2à ¯Ã‚ ¼Ã… ½Effect of temperature To determine the effect of temperature, the Tb2O3 with 15ml 0.067M CH3COOH solution were hydrothermally treated at 100, 160, 200, 220à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã†â€™ for 6h. According to the XRD patterns, the pure phase of Tb(OH)3 was only obtained at hydrothermal temperature above 160à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã†â€™, while only a small amount of Tb(OH)3 was formed at 100à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã†â€™, and most of products proved to be raw material Tb2O3. With the increase of reaction temperature to above 160à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã†â€™Ãƒ ¯Ã‚ ¼Ã…’the raw material Tb2O3 disappeared, and pure phase of Tb(OH)3 was obtained. When the temperature was increased to 220à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã†â€™Ãƒ ¯Ã‚ ¼Ã…’the crystallinity of Tb(OH)3 was significantly increased. The hydrothermal temperature has a great impact on the size of the terbium hydroxide precursors. Figure 5 shows typical SEM images of Tb(OH)3 in 0.067 mol/L HAc solution at various temperature. It can be seen that the a few microfiber-like structure of Tb(OH)3 was formed at low temperature of 100à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã†â€™(Fig.5a). When the temperature reached to 160à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã†â€™, the uniform microfibers of Tb(OH)3 nanowires with length of about 13 à ¯Ã‚ Ã‚ m were obtained(Fig.5b). With the enhancement of reaction temperature, the length of microfibers gradually increased, as well as the diameter of nanowires (inset in Fig.5b and Fig.5d). The more quantity of microfibers was formed at high reaction temperature than the low temperature. In addition these microfibers grew very slowly as the extension of reaction time at high temperature of 220à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã†â€™. Details of results are as shown in table1. That is because the reaction rate of the dissolving – recrystallization increases at high temperature, a large number of crystal nucleus has been quickly formed in the initial stage of reaction. In the case of no changing the total amount of raw materials, the smaller grain size has been formed under the condition of higher temperature. Meanwhile, the defect of products is less at high temperature than low temperature. Therefore the diameter of nanowires of microfibers at high temperature is bigger than at low temperature. 3.3. Effect of reaction In order to understand the reaction process, the reaction time was changed from 0 to 24h, while the CH3COOH concentration and reaction temperature were fixed to 0.067M and 200à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã†â€™, respectively, Figure 6 show the XRD results of samples received after 0 h (just when the oven reached 200 °C at a heating ramp of 5 °C /min), 0.5h, 2h, and 6h of hydrothermal reaction at 200  °C, respectively. According to the XRD patterns, when the oven reached 200  °C, the characteristic peaks of hexagonal Tb(OH)3 just began to appear in the XRD pattern, as shown in Figure 6a. Most of the characteristic peaks proved to be raw material Tb2O3. The pure phase Tb(OH)3 could be obtained after 30 min of hydrothermal reaction, and with the enhancement of reaction time, the intensity of main diffraction peak (100) gradually increased. It means that the crystallinity was gradually increased with the reaction time increased. Figure 7 shows SEM images of samples received after 0 h (just when the oven reached 200  °C at a heating ramp of 5  °C /min), 0.5 h, 2 h, 6 h, and 24 h of hydrothermal reaction at 200  °C, respectively. When the oven reached 200  °C, the product is composed of starfish-like microstructure (Figure 7a). With the increased of time to 0.5h(fig.7c), the morphology changed to microfibers of nanowires aggregated with diameter of 1.5 ÃŽ ¼m and length up to 5 ÃŽ ¼m. It is easy to find that these microfibers were composed of bundles of nanowires. As time was further increased to 6h (fig.7d), the spindle-like structures ranging in diameter less than 1.5ÃŽ ¼m and length more than 10ÃŽ ¼m were obtained. Finally, when time was increased to 24h (fig.7e), the nanowires of the spindle-like microfibers began to split. 3.4 the effect of CH3COOH on morphology According to the above phenomenon, CH3COOH plays a key role in determining the morphology of products. To determine the effect of CH3COOH on morphology, the pure water, sodium hydroxide, CH3COONa, HCl, oxalic acid and ascorbic acid (L-Ac) solution as the solvent instead of acetic acid. From XRD patterns we can see, no matter what kind of solution was used as a solvent, the pure phase Tb(OH)3 could be obtained. In 5M NaOH solution, the product was composed of nanorods aggregates. In pure water, nanoparticals and some mocrorods aggregates were obtained. (à ¦Ã‚ ¯Ã¢â‚¬ Ãƒ ¨Ã‚ ¾Ã†â€™Ãƒ §Ã‚ ¢Ã‚ ±,à ¦Ã‚ °Ã‚ ´,à §Ã¢â‚¬ ºÃ‚ Ãƒ ©Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã‚ ¸,à §Ã‚ ¡Ã‚ Ãƒ ©Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã‚ ¸,à ¨Ã‚ Ã¢â‚¬ °Ãƒ ©Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã‚ ¸,à §Ã‚ »Ã‚ ´Ãƒ ¤Ã‚ »-à ¥Ã¢â‚¬ËœÃ‚ ½c) Figure 9. SEM images of products synthesized from 0.45g of Tb2O3 in (a)10M NaOH solution and (b) pure water at 200 oC for 6h. Conclusion We have used terbium oxide and different concentrations of acetic acid to synthesize the single-crystalline Tb(OH)3 with various morphologies by a hydrothermal method. The concentration of acetic acid, reaction temperature, reaction time and types of solvents strongly affect the morphology and size of products. The morphology of the Tb(OH)3 products changed from granular aggregates, to microfibers of nanowires aggregated, spindle of nanowires, eventually into nanowires with increasing concentration. The crystallinity of the Tb(OH)3 products can be increased by enhanced the reaction temperature. The method utilized in this study to fabricate the terbium hydroxide with tunable morphologies is general and could be extended to synthesize the other rare earth hydroxides by simple adjusting the concentration of acetic acid.

Politics in Bolivia :: Essays on Politics

Politics in Bolivia Bolivia is a country located in the central part of South America. As one of the poorest countries in the region, Bolivia entered the XXI century carrying a vast population in extreme poverty. Bolivia has also faced the fate of those countries that don't have a shoreline, which has had a significant negative impact on its commerce, economy and overall development. The most outstanding issue affecting the social, economic and political dimensions of Bolivia's life is clearly the problem of the exportation of Bolivia's natural gas reserves. This is a very complex problem with deeply rooted social, political and historical elements. To understand the current situation in Bolivia we must go back to the IXX century. Bolivia lost a significant amount of territory in a War against Chile during the last part of the IXX century, thus losing access to the Pacific Ocean. Peru, another South American country, tried to help Bolivia, fighting against Chile during this war. As a consequence Peru also lost a significant amount of territory to Chile. Since then Bolivia has tried to regain access to he Pacific Ocean by several diplomatic means. Bolivia has unsuccessfully requested to Chile and Peru to be given a peace of sovereign territory in the coast, including a corridor that would allow Bolivians to connect to a peace of shoreline. Bolivia feels today more than ever the disadvantage of not owning a shoreline. Bolivia has vast deposits of natural gas, which they hope to export to other countries such as U.S and Mexico. Bolivia has engaged in negotiations with Peru and Chile in order to use a sea port in one of these countries to ship the gas to foreign markets. The previous Bolivian president Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada formed a technical team that evaluated the feasibility and benefits of a project that would use a Peruvian or a Chilean sea port to export Bolivian gas. The project should include a pipeline to be built between Bolivia and the sea-port to transport the gas from the natural deposit. After an extended evaluation this team recommended to use a Chilean port on basis of cost benefits. The Bolivian government then accepted these recommendations and started to engage in negotiations with Chilean companies. After making public the intentions of exporting Bolivian gas through Chilean facilities, the government faced a tremendous reaction from a significant amount of the population and some political sectors of Bolivian congress. The leader of the socialist movement, Evo Morales, called to other Bolivian sectors to rise against government intentions to use Chilean ports to export the Gas. Essay --

The Roman orator once stated, â€Å"Outside of my home is where my life is made† or in the Roman language he said, â€Å"Ex mei domus est ubi mei vita factavest†. He understood that most of our lives take place other than inside our homes. Also, it is important for people to enjoy the natural environment for several reasons. First of all, around the world lumberjacks are cutting down trees to make room for houses, office buildings, movie theatres, malls, and much more. The company who has told these lumberjacks to do this hideous deed does not know that by carrying out this action, the company and its employees are taking away millions of animal habitats. It varies from the Bobcat to the Grey Squirrel and animals like humans need shelter, food, and water to survive but without it, they die. People being able spend time in the outdoors will see what mankind is doing to these innocent little animals and might consider not to demand things that might hurt someone else. They will soon appreciate the natural environment and what Mother Nature has to give to the world. Another reason is that the p...

Funds for the arts Essay

In a world that thrives on science, the neglect of the arts is somewhat uncommon. What is baffling though is that the arts could have societal contributions as well. Some would find it hard to agree especially when some of the people had been driven to think that the scientific breakthroughs would be sufficient enough for their existence. Governments would readily shed some funds for the scientific pursuits but were reluctant to shell out some for the arts. It is in my belief then that the artistic pursuit should be recognized as important. But if the government were to just shell out some funds for the arts that would reflect the majority of the people then this should be thought twice. The diversity in people would be reason enough for the government to rethink their position. This diversity would not help in pinpointing what the majority really wants. Besides, it was said that the government funding could lead the arts to become passive (Radbourn). If people were to focus more on the majority then the artistic input would not be an artistic input at all but an input for the government’s satisfaction. The government should fund the arts but they should not give out rigid demands that only the voice of the majority would be reflected. Funding the arts could have considerable outcomes. Arts could affect the educational system since it would help learning become more interesting, it could also preserve the culture, it could have economic benefits (arts plus industry), and many more (â€Å"Arts Funding†). The rigid demand for the majority then could not help portray other ideas that may become essential and/or helpful in the near future. It would seem that funding the arts with such rigid demand for reflecting only the majority of the people would mean that the hidden motives are for the profit that the art would bring. Most artists frown upon those who would use their creativity and label it art for the benefit of the fame and money that they will receive. In fact, it will only be an exhaustive task where its sincerity is highly questionable. Works Cited â€Å"Arts Funding†. 2002. August 22 2007. . Interview with a Counselee

This interview was conducted one month after the counseling took place. The counselee was an average high school student who attempted to take suicide by slashing her wrist and cutting her tongue. The counselee informed the author of this paper that she made a suicide attempt due to feelings of abandonment by her family and friends. At present, the student is still undergoing follow-up sessions with the school counselor, and being observed by her class adviser.During the interview, the student showed some mannerisms of biting her fingers, and narrowing her eyes. She and the author (interviewer) sat in front of each other in a small counseling room. 1. When asked about her thoughts and feelings as she prepared for the counseling experience, the student said that she felt a little nervous that the counselor would get mad at her for attempting suicide. She did not want to open up at first because the counselor was unknown to her.Although she often saw the counselor in the school wheneve r she passed by the counseling room and during the orientation for freshmen, she had not come as close to the counselor as that time when she had counseling. Due to unfamiliarity with the counselor, she somehow felt that she could not trust her, and that the counselor would relay her secrets to other people. 2. The counselee also expressed that when she came inside the counseling room, the counselor smiled at her at once, and asked her to sit. The first words that the counselor uttered were, â€Å"How are you?† When the counselor spoke this, the student said she felt appeased that the counselor was not mad at her. She sensed then that the counselor was concerned about her. During the session, the counselor said that she would value whatever the student would share to her, and her feelings are very precious. She also told the student that everything they would talk about would be confidential, and as long as the counselee promises never to do the attempt again, the counselor w ould not inform her parents of what the student shared to her.Because of this, the student said she felt comfortable with the counselor and could not help but to express what she felt and thought that day. In assurance, the counselor said that she could be of help to the counselee if the counselee would allow her to help. In this particular counseling situation, we may note that the counselor was successful in building up rapport between her and the counselee. She did this by expressing that she values the feelings of the counselee (Wexler, as cited in Lambie, 2004 ), and the counselee could trust her with secrets. 3.As regards the obstacles that hindered the counselee from sharing her experience with the counselor, the counselee commented that due to the friendly approach and concern of the counselor, she felt at ease with her. 4. When asked what she learned about the helping/counseling process after undergoing it, the student said that she was very glad that they have a service li ke this in school and through this program she realized a couple of things. First, she realized that some people are concerned about her and she could find a friend among them, such as the counselor and other counselors as well. She also stated that she felt lucky that her school has a friendly and compassionate counselor who would listen to her, without condemning what she did. She also appreciated the fact that the counselor was not grading her for how she performed during the counseling session, and she did not have to be conscious of what she would tell the counselor. In other words, the process made her express her real self and provided her someone whom she felt was concerned. 5.As we can see, the counseling process that took place was of great help to the student. Through the school counseling program, students like the interviewee in this report are given the attention they need. Just like any counseling process, it is very important for every counselor to listen attentively, offer advice when needed, and make the counselee feel comfortable. In the case of the student, we may say that a lot of students nowadays have a different view of counseling unless they have undergone one.The misconceptions expressed by the counselee before the session include imagining the counselor getting mad at her, or relaying her secrets to her parents. Cultural Competence Essay

The claim that every person is a product of his own cultural background which includes, among other things, his life experiences as well as family, religion, ethnicity and age (Kim, 2001, p. 207) reflects the idea that cultural competence inevitably requires an understanding of other people’s cultural background other than one’s own. While it is true that â€Å"our cultural inventory provides us with valuable insights for understanding our beliefs and attitudes† as well as our values and assumptions† (Kim, 2001, p.  207), it is also important to consider the need to fill that inventory with how other individuals perceive people from other cultural backgrounds. With respect to cultural competence, it is not always enough to satisfy the need to widen our cultural awareness solely through our personal knowledge of other cultures. Indeed, it is true that we should look into the different parts of â€Å"our own cultural identity and examine their positive and negative impacts on our professional and personal development† (Kim, 2001, p. 27). But more to that, we should also consider how other people see other people in terms of their cultural background. In essence, cultural competence can sustain cultural awareness and tolerance inasmuch as it can further foster interaction among cultures. According to Johnson, Lenartowicz and Apud (2006), cultural competence involves at least four elements: knowledge of personal cultural worldview, knowledge of other cultural worldviews and practices, perception towards differences in cultures, and cross-cultural skills. Assuming that we are the products of each of our own cultural backgrounds, it appears that to be culturally competent means to be able to recognize other cultures and to be able to interact with those cultures. Interaction can come in many forms, from simple hand and facial gestures to the more complex ones such as personal interaction on a verbal basis. Whatever way we choose to interact with people who belong to another culture, it is important to practice tolerance towards cultural differences. Cultural intolerance can very well lead to disagreement or, worse, to bigotry. Cultural competence presupposes cultural tolerance precisely because the latter allows individuals from distinct cultures to interact with one another without resorting to hatred or bigotry. Cultural tolerance can only progress if people begin to realize the idea that the belief-systems that each one of us subscribes to does not necessarily invoke the task to assimilate others into our own belief-systems (Persell, 1997). It can also progress if people are able to realize that various cultures can live side-by-side without necessarily interfering with the affairs of one another (Fischer, 2007). If communities of individuals are able to coexist and interact, the cultural landscape becomes one that is peaceful and lively. In a peaceful and lively society thriving with unique cultures, the task of obtaining and practicing cultural competence becomes an easy task. On the other hand, a society where racial bigotry exists among others is a society that pre-empts cultural competence right at the bud. One way to achieve cultural tolerance is through seeing and understanding how other people understand other people from other cultures. Additionally, it also helps to see and understand how other individuals interact with other individuals from other cultures. Like a third-person viewer, being aware of the dynamics of the cultural exchanges of people expands our mental horizons as we become more equipped with cultural knowledge that we may have hardly had in directly interacting with people from other cultures. Our cultural inventory becomes more comprehensive since we are able to gather more information about how people from different cultures communicate, for instance, with one another. Many different forms of cultural exchanges happen in ordinary life and to be able to bear witness to these different forms gives us a clearer picture of what it takes to be culturally competent. When we begin to realize that cultures do not essentially incite hatred and indifference, we become more convinced to study other cultures and to mingle with other people. Eventually, being culturally competent becomes an easy task to take. Another way to achieve cultural tolerance is through a theoretical study of the practices and beliefs of various cultures. This can be done with the help of academic institutions which offer formal ways to introduce and to educate people about the ways of other cultures. These institutions provide a pivotal role in enlightening people—presumably students—about unfamiliar cultures and their practices and beliefs. Armed with cultural insight, people can, in a manner of speaking, let other cultures be. Moreover, the education given by these academic institutions provide a fundamental block towards reaching the goal of cultural competence; for without at least an academic knowledge of cultures there can hardly be any individual progress towards any one of the four elements of cultural competence. Perhaps the most effective and yet most difficult way of achieving cultural tolerance is through the study and practice of the languages of other people. Interestingly, it is argued that language holds the most useful key to understanding other cultures (D’Andrade, 2002). The setup and function of the linguistic component of culture appears to be universal. That is, every language in the world regardless of cultural distinctions involves the receiver and the sender of the message of the medium, language being the medium. Language regardless of cultural distinctions is essentially used for communication, which is why learning a ‘foreign’ language is a crucial step in learning a ‘foreign’ culture because it enables us to penetrate linguistic barriers. Having the language of another culture as part of our so-called â€Å"cultural inventory† is a formidable advantage in dissolving the hindrances towards a comprehensive cultural awareness and, ultimately, cultural competence. How is it possible that cultural tolerance leads to cultural competence? For the most part, a person who is tolerant of other cultures is a person who has already satisfied the need to know one’s own culture and other cultures. An individual cannot be tolerant of a culture which he or she is not even aware of. Moreover, the culturally tolerant person is also someone who has already formed his own perceptions towards other cultures including his own. The only thing missing in all of these is the actual practice of that tolerance into reality. A person who is fully tolerant of other cultures is one who is already able to interact with other individuals who belong to another race or religion, for instance. As a case in point, expatriates are people who have been absorbed into another culture in more or less the same way as they have absorbed such culture into their lives. They are culturally tolerant individuals because, at the least, they are able to mingle and live with people of what used to be a different culture. More importantly, expatriates are also individuals who possess cultural competence not only as a result of their cultural tolerance but also as a product of their interest and inclination in becoming ‘one’ with another culture. They become thoroughly attached to another culture to the point that they are already able to speak the native tongue, subscribe to and practice the dominant religion or even adapt the general lifestyle of that culture. In any case, cultural competence and cultural tolerance go with one another in most, if not all, instances. It may be noted, however, that our reflection on â€Å"the various aspects of our own cultural identity and [our examination of] their positive and negative impacts on our professional and personal development (Kim, 2001, p. 207)† may not necessarily lead to cultural competence. It may only lead us to cultural tolerance to a certain degree without ever reaching the stage of putting into practice what we have learned from our acts of reflection and examination of our cultural identity. Even though â€Å"each of us is a product of our cultural background (Kim, 2001, p. 2007),† we are not naturally inclined to be culturally competent. The fact that there are people who struggle to become culturally competent and that there are those who deny themselves of the chance to become one suggests the same thing—human beings are not naturally inclined to know other cultures and to interact with them. However, what it entails on a positive note is the idea that there is the possibility of an overlap among the many different factors involved in determining the cultural identities of individuals. Perhaps the biggest struggle towards achieving cultural competence is overcoming the possibility of treating one’s personal cultural worldview or even one’s culture as superior to the rest. In submitting to such risk, we become more prone to cultural intolerance as we tend to put down cultures other than our own. We may eventually lose interest in knowing other cultural worldviews and in observing people of different cultures interact with one another from an outsider’s perspective. Our â€Å"cultural inventory† becomes filled only with our own cultural worldviews and our reflection and examination of culture may hardly extend towards other cultures. Nevertheless, people can overcome all these risks and struggles as part of the task of becoming culturally competent. A person’s level of cultural competence may hardly be quantified (Fischer, 2007) but it does not mean that there is no such thing as cultural competence. The fact that cultures exist and the fact that each person is the product of his own cultural background (Kim, 2001) suggests that interaction among cultures is possible, if not highly likely. Obtaining cultural competence may be a laborious task but, in the end, it poses large benefits in sustaining cultural tolerance on both personal and group levels. REFERENCES D’ANDRADE, R.
